Frequently Asked Questions

It is a surgical procedure in which the nasal cartilages and bones are reshaped to improve its external appearance or aesthetic. It is one of the most common cosmetic facial surgeries and it´s the only procedure capable of improving both the appearance and breathing function of the nose.

There are various reasons for undergoing rhinoplasty, these are personal and individual motivations that lead each person to decide to take this step. Aesthetic reasons, functional reasons, or a combination of both are the most common indications for this procedure.

From an appearance perspective, there may be a specific feature you wish to modify, such as removing a nasal hump, refining a wide nasal tip, or correcting a drooping tip. Some patients also seek to correct a crooked nose that has been present for many years or developed after trauma. Most commonly, rhinoplasty involves a combination of techniques designed to address the patient’s concerns while also achieving a result that is harmonious with the rest of the face.

It is relatively common for certain aesthetic features — such as prominent or crooked noses, or asymmetries of the nasal tip and nostrils — to also cause breathing difficulties. With aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty, we can address both concerns so that you can look better and breathe better.

Improved nasal function often helps patients sleep and rest better, this translates into better daytime performance. It can also enhance breathing during sports activities. Additionally, it may improve airflow in patients with sleep apnea who use nighttime devices such as CPAP. Breathing well will ultimately improve your quality of life!

The most common contraindications include being too young or having a significant medical condition that may increase the risks associated with surgery. Rhinoplasty can be performed once the nose has fully developed, which usually occurs between the ages of 16 and 17. In the absence of relevant medical contraindications, there is generally no upper age limit for undergoing rhinoplasty. It is also important for patients to be emotionally well-prepared, motivated, and confident in their decision to proceed with surgery.

In the case of revision rhinoplasty, it is usually necessary to wait for a period of time before undergoing a secondary procedure. The recommended waiting time will depend on the type of the previous surgery performed and the specific goals of the new revision surgery.

The initial recovery after rhinoplasty typically lasts around 8–12 days; at this point the splint and sutures are usually removed. Most patients are able to return to their normal social activities during this period. Swelling continues to gradually decrease over the following weeks after surgery. Between the first and second month, most patients feel that their nose no longer appears swollen. During this time, it is essential to carefully follow postoperative care instructions in order to allow for a smooth and optimal recovery.

Full recovery and the final results of your rhinoplasty are achieved more gradually between 6 and 12 months, as the tissues completely settle and the healing process reaches its final stages. These are often subtle refinements and small details that further enhance the overall appearance of the nose. As a rhinoplasty specialist in Palma de Mallorca, I provide close postoperative follow-up to ensure a safe recovery and proper healing.

Rhinoplasty is not typically considered a painful procedure. Most patients experience little to no pain, or only mild discomfort. The most common postoperative symptoms are nasal congestion and swelling rather than significant pain.

In general, patients who undergo rhinoplasty report little to no pain during the first few days after surgery. This is typically described as 0 to 4 on a pain scale from 0 to 10. In most cases this can be effectively managed with simple pain medications.

The surgical techniques used in a rhinoplasty vary depending on each patient’s individual characteristics and the specific changes they wish to achieve. During your consultation, I will explain the expected recovery process for your particular case.

When we talk about rhinoplasty, we are actually referring to a wide range of surgical techniques used to improve both the shape and function of the nose. No two noses are alike, and therefore the choice of techniques will depend on each patient’s unique anatomy as well as the specific goals established for their surgery.

In our practice, we perform ultrasonic rhinoplasty following the two main contemporary philosophies in nasal surgery: structural rhinoplasty and preservation rhinoplasty. Each approach has specific indications and can provide excellent results when carefully selected for each individual case.

As a specialist in ultrasonic rhinoplasty in Palma de Mallorca, Dr. César García selects the most appropriate technique after a personalised assessment in the clinic. He frequently adopts a hybrid approach, combining the advantages of both structural and preservation rhinoplasty in order to enhance nasal aesthetics and function while achieving natural-looking results.
